    Munari’s Machines

    ,
In this book, Bruno Munari describes, with great seriousness and abundance of detail, machines... useful or useless, certainly unusual: machines for predicting the dawn, a lizard motor for tired turtles, a machine for taming alarm clocks, a tail shaker for lazy dogs... Munari's Machines is a poetic and ironic book that stands out for its inventiveness and creativity. Here Munari shows his ability to fuse art, design and didactics, presenting a series of imaginary machines inspired by the famous American cartoonist Rube Goldberg. Each machine, although the product of pure fantasy, is designed with a sense of realism and functionality, and reflects Munari's profound understanding of the world of design. Munari's Machines - collected in this book first published by Einaudi in 1942 and available again in the Corraini Edizioni catalogue - are inventions that are as precise as they are impossible. Described and illustrated down to the smallest detail, Munari's machines follow their own fantastic mechanics and rebel, to our great amusement, against the obligation of having to serve something.

Nine gym exercises come to life under your hands thanks to Marion Bataille’s lively (and muscular!) pop-ups. This book was born out of real gymnastics classes, where Marion Bataille uses colors to bring movement to life: red to show the parts of the body warming up, blue to represent the air flowing through us as we exercise, and yellow to evoke the walls of the gym. Printed with Pantone colors, Jim is a little gem created by one of the most beloved pop-up book artists. It's a treat for both adults and children, for sports lovers and even for those who prefer to just watch from the sidelines. Ready to begin?

Restless Modernity | The Il’dar Galeyev Collection of Soviet Children’s Books

    , ,
Over 100 Soviet children’s books, drawn from the remarkable collection of Russian specialist Il’dar Galeyev, trace the spread of cultural and educational innovations from Russia to the capitals of Western modernism in the early decades of the twentieth century. With contributions by James M. Bradburne, Rene Loewenson, Lisa Hilton, Arthur I. Miller, Clive Britton, John E. Bowlt, Nicoletta Misler, Simon Callow, and Jack Zipes, and enriched by an extensive iconographic apparatus, the volume offers a dual interpretative key: on the one hand, a timely and engaging reflection on the circulation of ideas; on the other, a rich and evocative visual journey through a unique collection of children’s books, bearing witness to a crucial moment in twentieth-century culture. Through the perspectives of international scholars on key figures and fields of modernity—from the arts to science, from psychoanalysis to music—an interdisciplinary inquiry emerges, inviting readers to reconsider how ideas are born, transformed, and disseminated over time. In an era in which ideas and information travel at dizzying speeds, shaping contemporary events, this book shows how modernity became “viral.”

Concrete, Mon Amour: the Raw Imprint of Modernism

    ,

A photographic exploration of modernism's fearless ambition and enduring impact. Once hailed as icons of radical experimentation and creative ambition, the concrete structures of the mid-to-late 20th century, which have become a defining subject of Stefano Perego’s photographic exploration, continue to stir both admiration and debate. Through the scope of his lens, Perego invites readers to reflect on the era that has shaped these relics of visionary modernism and the ideals they embody. Whether celebrated landmarks or forgotten outliers, enduring symbols of artistic ingenuity or imposing expressions of misappropriated power, Concrete, mon amour unpacks the intricate narratives embedded in these architectural giants. It considers their paradoxical nature: raw yet deliberate, unadorned yet unapologetically evocative. By capturing their permanence in diverse settings—urban or remote, pristine or weathered—this book compels a deeper interrogation into what sustains their continued relevance—their sheer monumentality, the audacity of their forms, or the honesty of their materials. Ultimately, the significance of these once-revolutionary visions lies not in answers but in the questions they leave behind.

Stefano Perego is a Milan-based architectural photographer renowned for exploring European modernist, brutalist, and postmodern structures. Celebrated for his ability to portray both the monumental and the intimate, Perego’s work invites thoughtful reflection on the ideals and contradictions inherent in modernism’s impact on the built environment.
