    Jim

    , , , ,
Sports coach and great motivator, Jim invites you to his gymnastics class, encouraging you to keep up the pace until the end! Warm-up, workout, stretching, relaxation... Nine gym exercises come to life under your hands thanks to Marion Bataille’s lively (and muscular!) pop-ups. This book was born out of real gymnastics classes, where Marion Bataille uses colors to bring movement to life: red to show the parts of the body warming up, blue to represent the air flowing through us as we exercise, and yellow to evoke the walls of the gym. Printed with Pantone colors, Jim is a little gem created by one of the most beloved pop-up book artists. It's a treat for both adults and children, for sports lovers and even for those who prefer to just watch from the sidelines. Ready to begin?

All Those Things That No Longer Fit

Sometimes there are ‘things’ that simply appear and do not go away. They don't go away anymore and in fact, they grow, they accumulate and you don't know where to put them. They don't fit in the biscuit jar, they don't fit in daddy's gym bag, they don't fit in grandma's shopping trolley, not on the bus and, at one point, not even in the river! The young protagonist carries around these ‘things’ that even he isn't sure he wants and that only increase, but... just when it seems that these little spheres, which are as yellow as the sun or as orange as ripe apricots, are about to overwhelm him, the unexpected happens.
He looks around carefully and sees ‘things’ of many other colours, sky blue, soft pink, meadow green, fuchsia and blue running around and mingling with his own. They are the ‘things’ that no longer fit even for the other children who play with him in the park and who, mixing ‘things’ and colours, create a joyful and bright confusion. Maybe these are dreams, maybe these are worries, maybe these are thoughts or desires, maybe these are fears or maybe these are secrets, or maybe these are the things we would like to learn and the things we already know. In this delicate book, Marta Lonardi provides us with an almost dreamlike and somewhat rarefied background in which to reflect on ‘all those things that no longer fit’ in each of us. This universal dimension without any indication of awhat exactly these ‘things’ are makes it a book suitable for audiences of all ages.

    Les printemps / The Springs

    , ,
In this book, Adrien Parlange evokes the great moments of one's existence. These moments, like decisive leaps and bounds, do not affect all ages; they focus on love, friendship, thrills, upheavals, persistent impressions, echoes of happiness and failure. The album fixes them with cut-outs that are so many windows open to memories, which coexist and write the story of a life. The author has developed an original device to better serve the poetry and the universality of his subject.

    Lines

    , ,
It all starts with a line , whether it's drawn with a pencil on paper or with skates on the surface of a frozen lake. With this new silent book, Suzy Lee once again blurs the lines between reality and fiction, between drawing and story. The entertaining—and seemingly simple—story of a young skater who whizzes and pirouettes on the ice creates a play of references between the author's line and the character's evolution , revealing the playful dimension of drawing.

    Aconà Biconbì by Bruno Munari

    , , , ,
Originally conceived as a work of sculpture issued from Munari’s researches on the subject of multiples, Aconà Biconbì was manufactured as a “game” for the first time in 1961 by Danese. Aconà Biconbì is available in 4 different colours (red, blue, white and green). Its modules are made of circular disks with a hole in the middle, laterally folded so that they can be freely joined together. The result is a complex three-dimensional structure, that changes into unlimited combinations depending on the number of the modules and their disposition. Source of inspiration for many designers and artists worldwide, Aconà Biconbì has often been reinvented and “moulded” in several ways and with different materials. Following the direction outlined in Corraini by Il gioco dell’amore e del caso by Paul Cox and Scatola di architettura MC N.1 and Poliscopio by Bruno Munari, Aconà Biconbì continues to discover the domain of artists’ objects and games, in order to develop a brand-new collection.

    Basello – Castiglioni in 2 sec. Flip-book

    , , , ,
“We can speak about industrial design in different ways: talking about or drawing an idea, through a critical essay, staging a show, with images, audio-video or, why not, with a new type of language as in this flip-book. I have been asked several times to write a book on the stories surrounding my father Achille’s designs, including anecdotes and episodes related to my family sphere. In this first project I wanted to ofer, in two seconds, one story of industrial design. Respecting the irony of an extraordinary father, I wanted to bring to light some lesser-known details of his, my and our private life, translating what I normally do when I talk about his projects into graphic form.” – Giovanna Castiglioni This flip-book is dedicated to Basello, a mobile piece of furniture designed by Achille Castiglioni in 1978. Its function can be declined in many ways: a desk, a bedside table, a ladder, a seat... eventually evolving into the mobile bookcase Joy. This volume was selected by the ADI Permanent Design Observatory as an example of the best Italian design put into production.

    When the Shadows Lengthen

    , ,
“Do you hear the silence? Silence makes noise… and among the advancing shadows, silence is in the longest wait.” An incredibly delicate colour palette brings us back to the warmth and atmosphere of sunset on a hot summer’s day. Written and illustrated by Giulia Vetri, When the Shadows Lengthen is a book that reminds us of the importance of contemplating silence and the art of waiting. Starting with a poem written by the author on a long summer day spent at her grandmother’s house in the Italian countryside, this book details the many moments that mark the arrival of evening inside and outside the walls of a house surrounded by hills, trees, and rivers. Something happens on every page, and yet every action, every gesture, speaks above all of the silence that surrounds everything, in the tranquillity of sunset and as the shadows lengthen.

    A Well-hidden Greyhound

    ,
Not everyone knows that greyhounds are extremely cautious and careful animals. In fact, they hide because they are afraid of everything: pigeons, balloons, wind, cats, other greyhounds... and when they are hiding it is not easy to find them and convince them to come out! So how can you stop your greyhound from suddenly running off in search of the nearest hiding place? This book offers several strategies: you can try to disguise your greyhound with scary disguises, so that the others will run away from it, or you can take your greyhound to places where you do not risk meeting anyone. What would you do? With his usual irony and lightheartedness, Andrea Antinori delivers a book that will make you smile at every page, and make you fall in love with this elegant and hopelessly fearful animal.

    River

    , ,
Inspired by a true story experienced by the author and her children, Suzy Lee's new book tells the unforgettable encounter with a black dog in search of a home. River was saved and welcomed with love and became a companion in games and adventures, which come to life on paper through simple and immediate lines. The white of the pages leaves room for the reader’s imagination, who immediately finds themselves immersed in River’s story and his way of seeing the world: we dive with him in the snow (or in a pile of leaves), we become part of the family, and through his point of view we experience happiness and friendship, but also expectation and nostalgia. In a format reminiscent of a diary, River traces an intimate and personal story, made up of images and words: a novelty compared to the previous silent books. We still find the characteristics that make Suzy Lee's style unique - the intensity of black and white, the surprise presence of colour, the essentiality of the features and the importance of the empty space - and that here have the spontaneity and strength of a first-person experience. The story becomes a way to deal with detachment, to make a bond that lasts over time which you do not want to forget.

    Ombra

    , ,
With a little help of imagination, a dark and desert cellar can become a thick and knotty jungle, full of curious plants and animals, sometimes quarrelsome but always ready to be involved in new fairy adventures. Suzy Lee’s illustrations – rendered in charcoal, pencil, watercolour, spray paint (lacquer) and digitally manipulated – accompany the reader in a new fresh visual experience, naturally simple and with an ironic and suspended end... In Ombra the tangible elements of the book as an object become part of the tale in itself: the central binding is not a mere constructive element of the book, but also the imaginary borderline between reality and phantasy. Suzy Lee deals with the horizontal binding: a new personal boundary between reality and imagination.

    Paper Poems

    , ,
“My life as an artist began alone in a room with colored paper and scissors creating shoes from tissue boxes and elaborate but flimsy cities for my animal figurines. Cutting, folding, and arranging paper remains my first language in color and form and the first step in my design process from furniture to websites, book layouts, typography, and more. With scissors I carve out the shapes of animals and objects from memory, investigating which lines and curves contain the gist. In this issue, the private meditations that fuel my design process are gathered as standalone works—poems made of paper.”

Zoey Kim is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer from South Korea. Her love for children’s picture books influenced her in many ways, both as a child and as an adult. Her drawings tell stories of various emotions and sometimes completely random thoughts that cross her mind. These thoughts are drawn and divided into different frames within the artwork giving viewers a chance to come up with their own imaginative stories; just like reading a children’s picture book. She loves drawing subjects with blurred and fuzzy textures, giving her work a soft and warm feeling.
